Discourse of Thought
by Dr. Javad Nurbakhsh

When I sought to abandon my soul for the sake of Him,
He said, "That's up to Me; I'll let you, if I want to."

He said, "Do not discourse about your thoughts and opinions.
I said, "I comply; whatever You wish, I will do."

He said, "Renounce whatever there is in the name of love."
I said, "I pledge my being, my soul, to Your loving eye."

He said, "Who are you to take steps toward Me?"
I said, "I cover the ground on Your feet."

He said, "What do you mean by not settling somewhere?"
I said, "My hope is to settle around Your lane."

He said, "It's the custom of the Path to keep secrets."
I said, "I have nothing to keep hidden but You."

He said, "What news do you have of Nurbakhsh?"
I said, "I know nothing of him to tell."
